Just realized a lot of newcomers in crypto still don't really get what PNL means, and honestly it's one of the most important things to understand if you're trading. Let me break it down for you.
So PNL stands for Profit and Loss, pretty straightforward. But here's where most people get confused - there are actually two types you need to know about.
First, unrealized PNL. This is the money you're sitting on while your position is still open. Say you bought ETH at 3,000 and it's now trading at 3,500 - you've got an unrealized profit of 500. But here's the catch: that 500 is only on paper. You haven't actually locked it in yet, so technically it's not yours until you sell.
Then there's realized PNL. The moment you close your position and hit sell, that's when your profit or loss becomes real. If you sell that ETH at 3,500, boom - your realized PNL is now +500. That's the actual money moving in or out of your wallet.
Now, there's also today's PNL, which is basically your running total for just the current day. It adds up all your wins and losses from today only. You'll see it displayed in green if you're up (which feels amazing), or red if you're down (which hurts). The thing is, it updates in real-time, so you can literally watch it change as markets move.
Why should you care about understanding PNL meaning? Because it directly impacts your trading decisions. When you can read your PNL clearly, you know exactly when to cut losses, when to take profits, and when to hold. It's not just about winning or losing - it's about actually understanding what's happening with your money.
Looking at the current market, BTC is sitting around 79.91K with a 2% daily gain, ETH is at 2.37K up 2.80%, and BNB is at 629.20 with a 1.91% bump. If you had positions in any of these, your PNL would be looking pretty green right now.
The real skill isn't just knowing what PNL means - it's learning to use that information to trade smarter. Have you checked your PNL today? What's it looking like?
