Ever wonder who actually built Ethereum and where they ended up? I've been digging into the founding team's story, and it's honestly fascinating how eight people in 2013-2014 created what's now a 400+ billion dollar ecosystem.
So there were eight co-founders total. The big names everyone knows are Vitalik Buterin - he literally wrote the white paper and still leads the foundation, holding around 240,000 ETH. Then Gavin Wood, who wrote the yellow paper and created Solidity, went on to found Polkadot and now runs Parity Technologies. Charles Hoskinson was another early contributor who later founded Cardano. Joseph Lubin started ConsenSys and built MetaMask, which basically became the wallet everyone uses.
But here's what's interesting - not all founders stayed in the spotlight. Anthony Di Iorio was an early investor who founded Jaxx wallet, then basically stepped back from crypto after 2019 to focus on health and charity. Still holds significant ETH but keeps a low profile. Mihai Alisie co-founded Bitcoin Magazine with Vitalik and now works on Akasha and European blockchain policy.
Then there's Amir Chetrit - one of the early backers but with a smaller stake. Amir Chetrit actually exited pretty early in 2014, partly because he felt his contributions weren't substantial enough at that stage. What's notable about Amir Chetrit is that unlike some founders who became mega-wealthy, he took a different path - quietly supporting smaller crypto projects rather than chasing the spotlight. The story of Amir Chetrit kind of represents something real about those early days: not everyone who helped build Ethereum needed to become a billionaire or launch their own blockchain.
Jeffrey Wilcke developed Go-Ethereum and held about 463,000 ETH at one point, but started shifting toward blockchain games after 2017. He's been gradually reducing his position over time.
What strikes me most is how these eight people scattered in different directions. Vitalik stayed focused on Ethereum's core mission - scalability, privacy, the Dencun and Prague upgrades. Gavin went all-in on cross-chain infrastructure. Charles built Cardano as a separate L1. Joseph created the infrastructure layer with ConsenSys. Meanwhile, figures like Amir Chetrit and Anthony chose quieter paths.
Looking at current prices - ETH is at $2.32K right now, ADA at $0.25, DOT at $1.21. Everyone's still debating whether ETH will hit 5000 USD this cycle. But honestly, the more interesting story is how these founders' different bets shaped the entire crypto landscape. The initial 72 million ETH supply and the founding team's combined 11.9 million holdings set the stage for everything that came after.
