The diplomatic impasse between the US and Iran is deepening. President Donald Trump rejected Iran's new 14-point peace proposal, presented through Pakistan, as "unacceptable." Speaking to Israeli media on May 3, 2026, Trump stated, "I have reviewed Iran's new proposal and it is unacceptable to me."
✨ Content of the Proposal and Reasons for Rejection
🔹Iran submitted its final draft of negotiations to the US on Thursday evening, April 30, through mediator Pakistan. The proposal is based on securing a ceasefire first, followed by a 30-day period to address the details. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Bekayi clarified the scope of the proposal, stating, "The nuclear issue is not included in these points."
🔹Trump, in a statement on the Truth Social platform, claimed that Iran "has not yet paid a high enough price for what it has done to humanity and the world for the past 47 years." This harsh rhetoric indicates that Washington expects more comprehensive concessions from Tehran.
✨ Ceasefire Fragile, Strait of Hormuz Closed
🔹The war, which began with surprise US and Israeli airstrikes on February 28, has been halted by a fragile ceasefire since April 8. However, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues. Brent crude tested its highest level since 2022 on Thursday at $126 and is currently trading around $122.
🔹The blockage of this critical waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world's energy supply passes, is increasing global inflationary pressure. Gasoline prices are rising in the US, and the Trump administration is under increasing pressure from domestic public opinion ahead of the November midterm elections.
✨ Military Option on the Table, Markets on Alert
🔹Trump's statement, "Do we want to go and completely destroy them and finish this forever? Or are we trying to make a deal?", indicates that the military option is still on the table. According to Axios, CENTCOM is working on a plan for a new wave of attacks against Iran.
🔹In contrast, a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll reveals that 61% of Americans consider Trump's use of military force against Iran a mistake. This situation puts the administration in a difficult equation, both diplomatically and militarily.
✨ Diplomacy cannot breathe in the shadow of war; if markets cannot price in peace, they will price in uncertainty.
