I just read about Jesse Livermore and honestly, this guy's story is mind-blowing. He wasn't a crypto trader, but his lessons are brutally applicable to any market.
This guy was born in 1877 in Massachusetts, grew up on a farm, and was already trading by age 14. He moved to New York, joined the NYSE, and literally dominated Wall Street in the early 20th century. They called him "The Great Bear of Wall Street" because he knew how to make money when others lost everything.
The craziest part was in 1907 during the financial panic. Jesse shorted and pocketed his first million. But what really made him legendary was 1929. When the market crashed, this guy had already seen the crisis coming and took advantage. He made around 100 million dollars in that crash. Imagine that converted to today’s money.
Now, Jesse Livermore wasn’t just about profits and champagne. His personal life was a disaster. Four marriages, addiction problems, a trading style so aggressive it caused a lot of controversy. And the ending was tragic: in 1940, at age 63, he committed suicide.
But here’s the interesting part. Despite how it ended, his trading principles are pure gold. The guy wrote "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" in 1923, and that book remains a bible for traders. His rules are simple but devastatingly effective:
Timing is everything. Follow the trend, don’t fight it. Cut losses quickly, very quickly. Let profits run. And the hardest part: control your emotions.
Many crypto traders I know study Jesse Livermore without realizing it. His strategies fit perfectly with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets. Market psychology hasn’t changed in 100 years, only the instrument.
If you want to understand how the best operate, Jesse Livermore is a must. His story is a reminder that in markets, discipline and patience are worth more than luck.
