OpenAI Codex introduces desktop floating pets that can display work status in real-time

AIMPACT News, May 3 (UTC+8): OpenAI has launched a desktop floating pet feature in its Codex programming tool, allowing users to customize pixel-style companion pets. The pet can be displayed globally across the screen, showing real-time Codex backend work statuses such as “Thinking” and “Task Completed,” and providing AI progress feedback through bubbles and actions. Codex officially includes 8 basic pets, and it also supports uploading images via the /hatch command to automatically generate animated pets. The community has created many popular characters, including recreations of Microsoft’s big-eyed clip, a Mac smiley face, a Steve Jobs pet version, DeepSeek whale, and more. PetShare, PetDex, and other pet encyclopedia websites have emerged as well. The official hosted competitions in which selections from the Top 10 can receive a 30-day ChatGPT Pro reward. In the same update, Codex added a cross-platform migration feature for configuration files, which can automatically detect and import configurations for tools such as Claude Code; it also added a dictation dictionary that supports custom abbreviation recognition. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Codex is in a “ChatGPT moment,” with the product evolving toward highly sticky desktop super-applications.
