ME News report: On April 14 (UTC+8), according to monitoring by 1M AI News, Amap’s embodied intelligence research department under Alibaba is preparing to launch a four-legged (quadruped) robot, which will be Alibaba’s first product in the robotics hardware field. An Amap spokesperson said the company “has made deep investments in embodied intelligence, continues to release multiple embodied models, and actively explores hardware product formats such as quadruped robots and humanoid robots,” adding that it is expected to “release its first quadruped robot soon.”

The product will engage in front-line, face-to-face competition with Unitree Technology’s Go series; its Go2 is priced at $1,600. Amap is also assessing the feasibility of humanoid robots. In doing so, Alibaba is entering an increasingly crowded track: Unitree Technology, Zhiyuan Robotics, and its affiliated company Ant Group have all already moved into this space.

Talent competition is also intensifying. Robotics company UBTECH has currently offered a highest salary of 124 million yuan RMB (about 18 million USD) to recruit a chief scientist. It’s not surprising that Amap—built on map and local life services—is making its move into robotics: Amap has accumulated a large amount of indoor and outdoor spatial data and navigation algorithms, which are precisely the core capability foundation for mobile robots.
