I just realized that many of you are still unclear about what layer 1 blockchain is and why it’s important. Simply put, layer 1 blockchain refers to the foundational blockchains — they operate as the main network, handling and finalizing transactions independently without support from other networks. Each layer 1 has its own native token for paying fees, and also serves as the infrastructure platform for other applications built on top, such as layer 2 solutions or dApps.
However, early generation layer 1 blockchains also have significant weaknesses. For example, Bitcoin can only process about 2.83-4.17 transactions per second (TPS), and Ethereum, with a gas limit of 30 million per block, realistically achieves around 11.8 TPS. That’s why new projects are emerging to improve these limitations.
Looking at modern layer 1 blockchains, their performance has improved greatly. Solana reaches 110,000 TPS, Aptos up to 160,000 TPS — these numbers are truly impressive compared to what Bitcoin or Ethereum can do. The improvements in speed, scalability, and new features are the reasons these new layer 1 blockchains are noteworthy.
I see investing in layer 1 blockchains offers safety along with strong growth potential. In this cycle, I’m tracking three layer 1s: APT, currently at $1.00 with a -2.93% change in 24h; SUI at $0.92, up +0.28%; and SEI at $0.06, up +0.57%. All three have interesting unique points, and I’ll do a more detailed analysis soon.
