ME News report, April 8 (UTC+8). Today, Iran empowered Bitcoin through the Strait of Hormuz, requiring shipping companies to pay Bitcoin-denominated transit fees for oil tankers carrying cargo that pass through the strait during a two-week ceasefire period. The fee is $1 per barrel of oil, while empty tankers can pass for free. “Once the email arrives and Iran completes the assessment, ships will have a few seconds to pay in Bitcoin, ensuring they cannot be tracked or confiscated due to sanctions.”

According to authoritative estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA), if Hormuz traffic resumes to previous levels during the ceasefire, about 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products will pass per day. Iran would receive $20 million worth of Bitcoin for this. During the two-week ceasefire, Iran is expected to receive $280 million worth of Bitcoin—roughly equivalent to 4,000 coins at current prices.

BlockBeats notes that the analysis is purely theoretical, based on normal weekday flows. Actual traffic may differ significantly due to factors such as free passage for empty tankers, the implementation of the measures, or current geopolitical factors. In addition, the rollout of the Bitcoin transit fee scheme remains to be observed. (Source: BlockBeats)
