AIMPACT News, April 14 (UTC+8): The Hong Kong Legislative Council established the Subcommittee on Matters Concerning the Development of Artificial Intelligence and Robot Technology and held its first meeting today. Legislative Councilor Wu Jie-zhuang, who has long been focused on developments in cutting-edge technology, was elected chair.

The development of artificial intelligence and robot technology is the subcommittee’s focus on formulating strategies for the development of artificial intelligence and robot technology in Hong Kong. It will conduct a comprehensive review of the economic benefits and growth potential brought to Hong Kong by all sectors, including finance, healthcare, logistics, education, construction, and the creative industries; delve into the specific impacts of technology applications on the structure of the local labor market, including the effects on different job roles (from frontline operations to professional positions) and the risks of replacement; examine whether current human resources policies, vocational education, and retraining mechanisms are sufficient to respond to industrial transformation; and, with respect to how to balance the benefits from technological advances with labor protection, how to promote the “human-machine collaboration” mode, and how to improve the development of the talent pool, actively put forward opinions and recommendations.
