Iran plans to impose cryptocurrency transit fees on transit oil tankers during the ceasefire period.
ME News Report, April 8 (UTC+8), a spokesperson from Iran’s Oil, Natural Gas, and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union stated that during a two-week ceasefire, Iran plans to charge a toll of $1 per barrel for all oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, and requires the tankers to use the northern route near the Iranian coast, declare cargo via email to Iran, and complete payment within seconds using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Iran said this move is to monitor for weapons transportation, and unpermitted ships will face the threat of military strikes. Currently, only a few oil tankers associated with Iran are attempting to pass, with about 300 to 400 ships waiting to exit the Gulf, and industry insiders say it will be difficult to clear the backlog within two weeks.
