AIMPACT message: On May 1 (UTC+8), this February, employees of Meta contractor Sama reported that they had seen sensitive, private footage recorded through Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Less than two months after the report was published, Meta terminated its contract with Sama. Sama is a Kenya-based data labeling company that previously performed video, image, and speech labeling work for Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta AI system. Around 1,108 workers were affected. After the incident was reported by Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten, as well as independent journalist Naipanoi Lepapa, discussions were sparked about the working conditions of data labeling workers and privacy protection.
