Senate Rejects Resolution to Limit Trump's War Powers Against Iran as 60-Day Deadline Approaches

On May 1, the U.S. Senate rejected the sixth attempt by Democrats to limit President Trump’s war powers against Iran, as the conflict nears a critical 60-day deadline. Republicans continue to firmly support the Trump administration. On Thursday, a procedural vote on a war powers resolution proposed by California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff was defeated with 47 votes in favor and 50 against. The resolution aimed to direct the president to withdraw U.S. troops from hostile actions against Iran. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 stipulates that if Congress does not authorize military action, the president must withdraw armed forces within 60 days. This 60-day period begins from the date the president formally notifies Congress. President Trump sent a letter to Congress on March 2, informing them of hostile actions against Iran, which means the 60-day deadline will end on May 1 (Friday). The president can extend the deadline by 30 days to facilitate troop withdrawal.
