Just came across this interesting breakdown of some genuinely affordable places in America where you can actually afford to live without breaking the bank. Turns out Ohio has a lot of options if you're looking for best affordable housing - seven of the top 15 cities are there, which is kind of wild.
New Philadelphia, Ohio seems to be leading the pack with homes averaging around $186k and annual living costs hitting about $35,500. The violent crime rate is pretty reasonable too at 0.69 per 1,000. If you want to check out other options, New Ulm in Minnesota is another solid pick - lower crime rate of 0.29 per 1,000 and annual costs around $36,361. San Elizario, Texas is interesting if you're looking for something cheaper - homes at $167k and annual living costs under $37k.
The analysis looked at 150 of the safest cities with populations over 10,000, then filtered down to find places with the best affordable cost of living. Places like Columbus, Indiana and Edwardsville, Illinois also made the cut. Edwardsville actually has the highest livability score at 90 and keeps annual costs under $45,500.
What's interesting is you're seeing a real mix geographically - Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maine, Texas, Indiana all represented. If you're seriously considering a move and want best affordable options without compromising on safety, these cities are worth researching. Most of them have monthly mortgage costs under $2k and pretty manageable living expenses overall. The data was pulled from FBI crime stats and housing data from early 2025, so it gives you a solid baseline for comparison even if some specific numbers might have shifted slightly since then.
