been digging into bond funds lately and honestly diversified ones seem way smarter than picking individual bonds yourself. way easier on the wallet and you get better liquidity that way. found three that keep popping up when i look at best bond index funds - DWS Short Duration, BBH Limited Duration, and Osterweis Strategic Income. all three have solid track records if you're into that steady income thing without taking crazy risks.
DWS Short Duration is interesting because it sticks to high-grade fixed income stuff, different maturities mixed in. returned 5.5% over three years which is decent. Bryan Dziuban's been managing it since 2024. BBH Limited Duration goes for maximum returns on the bond side, heavy into asset-backed securities and bonds. that one did 6.3% over three years and as of last april had like 65% in total misc bonds so pretty diversified there.
then there's Osterweis Strategic Income which honestly sounds more rigorous with their credit analysis and interest rate forecasting approach. no weird restrictions on duration or credit targets. returned 8.5% over three years which is the strongest of the three. expense ratio sits at 0.83% which is reasonable. if you're comparing best bond index funds out there this is definitely worth looking at. the whole point of going with funds instead of individual bonds is you get better diversification and less headache, plus you're not overpaying on fees like you would building your own portfolio.
