Just came across this ranking of the worst cities to drive in America and some of the stats are pretty wild. Apparently fatal accidents jumped nearly 10% between 2020 and 2022, and certain cities are way more dangerous than others when it comes to road safety.
Albuquerque tops the list as the most dangerous place to drive, scoring a perfect 100 on their risk scale. The city has crazy high rates of distracted driving fatalities, drunk driving crashes, and speeding incidents. Memphis is right behind it with the highest total number of fatal accidents per capita, while Detroit rounds out the top three with serious numbers on drunk driving and speed-related crashes too.
The research looked at 50 major US cities and ranked them across five key metrics: total fatal accidents, drunk driving incidents, distracted driving, speeding, and deaths per 100,000 residents. Other worst cities to drive in include Tucson, Kansas City, Dallas, Louisville, Phoenix, Fort Worth, and Tampa. What's interesting is how much variation there is between cities - some have way worse problems with drunk drivers, others struggle more with distracted driving or speeding.
The whole analysis is based on five-year averages from 2017-2021 data, so it's looking at established patterns rather than just one-off incidents. Insurance companies actually use this kind of data to set your premiums too. If you're in one of these worst cities to drive in, your rates probably reflect the higher accident risk in your area. Safe driving habits are basically the only way to keep costs down, especially in places where dangerous driving is more common.
