So I was wondering, do dogs eat watermelon? Turns out they totally can, which is great because my pup keeps eyeing mine during summer. Did some digging and apparently it's actually pretty healthy for them—low in calories, super hydrating, packed with vitamins and minerals. Perfect for hot days honestly.
But here's the thing: you gotta be careful about the seeds and rind. Those are basically indigestible and can cause blockages or choking, which is not what you want. So if you're giving your dog watermelon, remove everything first and just stick to the flesh. Cut it into small bite-sized pieces so there's no choking risk.
The cool part is watermelon is like 92% water, so it keeps them hydrated without adding much calorie-wise. Plus all those vitamins—C for healing, A for skin and muscles, B6 for immune stuff. I started giving my dog a few small pieces as an occasional treat and she loves it.
One thing to watch though: don't let them go crazy with it. Too much at once can mess with their digestion and cause upset stomach or diarrhea. And obviously, don't give them moldy or old watermelon you wouldn't eat yourself. Frozen watermelon is also a solid option for cooling them down in summer, just make sure it's seed and rind-free.
So yeah, do dogs eat watermelon? Definitely, just keep it as an every-now-and-then treat rather than a regular thing. My vet gave the thumbs up when I asked, so that's reassuring. Definitely check with yours too before trying any new foods with your pup.
