Just looked into getting a DBA set up in Florida and honestly it's way simpler than I thought. Basically if you want to run your business under a different name than your legal one, you just need to register it. Like an author using a pen name or someone branding their side hustle differently.

So here's the thing - a DBA isn't the same as forming an LLC. It's more like a registered nickname for your business. You can't use it to shield your personal assets, but if you're just looking to operate under a different name without all the legal complexity of an LLC, it works. The florida dba registration process itself is pretty straightforward.

You basically pick your name, make sure it's not already taken, then advertise it in a local newspaper in your county (just once, which is cool). After that you either file online through the state website or mail in the Application for Registration of Fictitious Name. The fee is $50, though certified copies cost extra if you want them.

One thing I didn't realize - you have to advertise BEFORE you register. And the whole thing lasts five years before you need to renew. If you want to dissolve it later, that's another $50. Not bad honestly. The florida dba registration timeline is pretty manageable if you plan ahead and don't sleep on that newspaper ad requirement.
