Just spent way too long researching payment systems for a side project and honestly, there's so much more out there now than I thought. The whole mobile pos solutions space has gotten pretty competitive lately.
So basically, if you're running any kind of small business and don't want to be chained to a physical register, you've got options. I was looking at Square first because everyone talks about it - and yeah, it's genuinely free to start with just their app and card reader. The flat rates are straightforward (2.6% plus 10 cents for in-person stuff) but I can see how that adds up if you're doing serious volume.
Clover came up next in my research. It's more of a hardware + software combo deal, which is interesting if you already have a payment processor you like. You can use it offline too, which is kind of a big deal. The catch is you're locked into their hardware setup, and pricing varies depending on which reseller you go through. They've got different setups for retail, restaurants, all that.
Vend seems solid if you're on iOS - but that's the thing, it only works with Apple devices. No Android support. It's got this built-in loyalty program which is actually pretty useful for tracking customer stuff. Runs about $69-229 monthly depending on what you need.
For retail specifically, Lightspeed keeps popping up. Similar to Vend but way better inventory management, which makes sense for retail operations. Also iOS only though. The pricing gets flexible once you hit higher transaction volumes, which is cool if you're scaling up.
Shopify's angle is different - they're pushing the whole online + in-person integration thing. If you're doing e-commerce AND physical sales, it's worth looking at. But yeah, it's pricier than most other mobile pos solutions. You're paying for that integration though.
Toast is basically the restaurant version of all this. Heavy-duty hardware, kitchen display system, contactless payments built in. Only works with Android, requires a multi-year contract (which is annoying for new places), but if you're serious about restaurant tech, it handles it. 2.49% plus 15 cents across the board.
Loyverse is the wild card - free app on both iOS and Android, but no payment processing built in. You need your own merchant account. The loyalty tracking is their whole thing, which works if customer relationships are your bread and butter.
Honestly, picking the right mobile pos solutions really depends on your specific setup. High-volume retail? Different needs than a food truck. Already invested in certain hardware? That matters. Budget constraints? Obviously factor in. I was surprised how much the device compatibility thing matters - some systems are locked to iOS or Android, which is kind of annoying in 2026.
The security stuff is real too. Cloud tech is better than it used to be, but mobile devices can still get hacked or stolen. Just something to keep in mind.
Anyone else been through this? Which system actually works best for what you're doing?
