Solana Developers Support Falcon Signature Scheme to Face Quantum Threats

Solana is increasingly preparing for the post-quantum era. The Solana team revealed that the migration plan has been thoroughly researched, fully understood, and ready to be implemented when the quantum threat emerges.

Although the quantum threat is still several years away, the foundation announced that the core development teams of Anza and Firedancer have agreed to use the post-quantum scheme known as Falcon.

Solana Sets Post-Quantum Signature Plan

Currently, Solana uses Ed25519, an elliptic curve signature scheme for transaction authorization. Like Bitcoin with secp256k1, this algorithm will be vulnerable to Shor’s algorithm once quantum computers become highly advanced.

It should be noted that Falcon is a high-performance lattice-based digital signature algorithm. This algorithm is also one of the signatures selected by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

This efficiency is crucial for Solana because its high-speed network design offers limited space for additional cryptographic load.

The fact that Anza and Firedancer arrived at this conclusion independently further strengthens this approach. Both have also published their initial Falcon implementations on GitHub.

“Consensus on Falcon demonstrates in-depth research into Solana’s resilience against quantum technology. While changes are not immediately necessary, there is a clear and well-studied plan that can be activated when the time comes. The migration process is controlled, transitions can happen quickly when the time is right, and network performance is not expected to be significantly affected,” the blog explained.

Solana is not the only one moving in this field. In November 2025, the Algorand Foundation protocol team conducted the first post-quantum transaction on Algorand, implementing the Falcon signature scheme directly on the mainnet.

How Solana’s Migration Plan Will Proceed

Currently, Solana’s quantum roadmap outlines three main steps ahead. First, researchers will continue evaluating Falcon and other alternative schemes.

Second, if the quantum threat begins to appear real, new wallets will immediately adopt the post-quantum scheme. Finally, existing wallets will be migrated to the new standard.

This progress is not only driven by the core developers. A broader ecosystem has already released functional tools, with Blueshift’s Winternitz Vault being live for over two years. Google Quantum AI even highlighted it in a 2026 paper as an example of “proactive post-quantum innovation in the industry.”

Several other major networks are also racing to secure their position for the post-quantum era. Justin Sun announced that TRON will activate a quantum-resistant network on the mainnet in Q3 2026, while also preparing to become the “world’s first quantum-resistant network.”
