sam altman is about to be questioned in court about how he turned a charity into a $1 trillion company.

quick recap of how we got here:
2015: musk, altman, brockman and a few others co-found openai as a nonprofit charity. the stated mission is to build agi "to benefit humanity," free from shareholder pressure and profit motives.
2015-2017: musk personally funds the charity with around $38 million.
2018: musk leaves the board after losing an internal fight over direction.
2019: openai creates a for-profit subsidiary. the nonprofit technically sits on top, but the for-profit eclipses it.
2022-2026: chatgpt explodes. microsoft pours in billions. openai's valuation climbs toward $1 trillion. ipo on the horizon.
today: musk is suing for $134 billion in "wrongful gains," removal of altman and brockman from their roles, and a partial reversal of the restructuring. every dollar of damages he's asking for goes back to the nonprofit, not to him.
a charity built to help humanity is now a $1 trillion company run by a ceo who gets rich if it succeeds. and it is still called open ai, even though nothing about it is open.
