I just learned about Faruk Ozer's death in prison. The guy was one of the biggest figures in the crypto boom in Turkey, but it all ended tragically.

For those who don't know: Ozer launched Thodex, which became one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the region. At its peak, the platform had over 400,000 users, and trading volumes reached billions of dollars daily. Sounds like success, but then it turned out that $2.6 billion in deposits simply disappeared.

Ozer fled to Albania, but he was detained in 2022. He was extradited back to Turkey, and in court, he claimed it was all due to the uncertain regulatory environment, that he had no criminal intent. But the court didn't believe him. In September 2023, he was sentenced—11,196 years in prison. It was one of the harshest sentences in the history of crypto scandals. Chainalysis even called this case one of the biggest exchange platform robberies in the last ten years.

Now he died in a high-security cell at Tekirdağ Prison. This is truly a dark chapter in the history of the crypto industry. It shows how blurred the line is between innovation and crime in this world. Many started as ambitious entrepreneurs, but money flows and lack of oversight changed everything. A lesson for all of us.
