I just saw some pretty interesting news from the Ethereum community - developers have announced a proof-of-concept model for what’s called "Native Rollups," and this could be a significant step forward for Layer 2.

Its operation is quite simple but clever. Instead of Layer 2 relying on external verification systems like zero-knowledge proofs or fraud proofs, this solution allows Ethereum to verify state transitions from Layer 2 directly on the base layer. The technical mechanism behind it involves a precompile called EXECUTE through EIP-8079, which enables replaying Layer 2 blocks on Ethereum to verify their validity.

This makes a lot of sense because it allows Layer 2 networks to inherit Ethereum’s security features and protocol upgrades directly. In the long run, this could significantly reduce maintenance costs and make the Layer 2 ecosystem more efficient.

Participants include developers from the Ethrex client, the Ethereum Foundation, and researchers from L2BEAT. Currently, it’s still in the early exploratory stage, not yet deployed on mainnet, but if successful, this could be a breakthrough in how Layer 2 interacts with Layer 1.
