Middle East situation escalates? The U.S. State Department urgently urges citizens: Leave Iran and Lebanon immediately
Tensions in the Middle East remain tense, and the U.S. Department of State has issued its latest advisory for the safety of Americans abroad, strongly urging American citizens currently in Iran and Lebanon to “leave immediately,” and calling on people to take advantage of available commercial flights and land routes to evacuate as soon as possible from high-risk areas. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also took to the front lines, strongly urging in an official video the registration of the Department of State’s “Smart Traveler Enrollment Program” (STEP). The Department of State will also waive any legal obligation for American citizens to reimburse the government for travel expenses.
Iranian airspace partially reopens; officials urge people to leave as quickly as possible via air, land, and sea
According to the latest security guidance issued by the U.S. Department of State, as of April 21, Iranian airspace has partially reopened. The Department of State strongly urges American citizens to leave Iran immediately and reminds local expat communities to closely monitor the latest updates from local media.
For evacuation routes, officials advise people to consult commercial airlines as soon as possible to obtain more information about flights departing Iran and seat availability. In addition, the Department of State added that, in addition to air travel, American citizens seeking to leave Iran should also evaluate their own safety and consider crossing the border by “land.”
Lebanon’s situation is complex and volatile—take advantage of commercial flights before service suspends
Meanwhile, amid the heightened tensions in Lebanon, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut is on high alert and closely monitoring local developments. The Department of State emphasized that Lebanon’s current security situation remains “complex and can change at any moment,” with the possibility of sudden incidents at any time.
The U.S. side is also urging American citizens in Lebanon to arrange their departure as soon as possible while “commercial flights are still available,” to avoid getting stuck there in the future due to airspace closures or the full cancellation of flights.
Rubio takes to the front lines; the government waives all evacuation costs
The Department of State advises American citizens in the areas mentioned above to remain highly vigilant at all times, ensuring that passports and other important travel documents remain within their validity period and are readily accessible. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also strongly urged in an official video the registration of the Department of State’s “Smart Traveler Enrollment Program” (STEP), so that, in times of emergency, people can receive the latest safety alerts and official assistance. The department is assisting with the arrangement of charter flights and will continue to ensure increased capacity based on security conditions. In a statement, the Department of State said the relevant departments are doing everything they can to answer calls seeking assistance from American citizens across the Middle East and will continue to provide the latest travel options. It will also waive all evacuation costs, removing any legal obligation for American citizens to reimburse the government for travel expenses.
