U.S. FBI: Cryptocurrency fraud losses to reach $11.36 billion in 2025, hitting a new high, with seniors being the most affected

ME News Report, April 13 (UTC+8), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center released its annual report showing that cryptocurrency-related fraud losses reached a record $11.37B in 2025, a 22% increase year-over-year, accounting for more than half of the total internet crime losses of $20.9 billion for the year. The center received a total of 181.6k cryptocurrency-related complaints, a 21% increase, with an average loss of $62.6k per incident. Seniors aged 60 and above reported 44.5k complaints, with losses totaling $4.4 billion, a roughly 56% increase from $2.84 billion in 2024. Cryptocurrency investment scams caused losses of $7.2 billion, ranking first among all types of fraud. Scams conducted through cryptocurrency ATMs and self-service kiosks resulted in losses of $389 million, a 58% increase. Additionally, the center for the first time included artificial intelligence as a tracking category, receiving 22.4k related complaints with losses of $893 million. (Source: PANews)
