So I've been diving deep into nft games lately and honestly, the variety right now is pretty wild. A few years ago everyone was talking about play-to-earn but most projects just died off. Now though, there's actually some solid stuff worth your time if you're into gaming and crypto.
Shrapnel caught my attention first - it's this extraction shooter that feels like a real AAA game, not some janky Web3 thing. You're basically a MEF Operator choosing between Assault, Survivalist, or Infosec classes, and the whole point is getting loot out of The Zone before you get taken down. The devs at Neon Machine are serious about this, and they're using Avalanche to avoid those brutal Ethereum gas fees. What's cool is they actually let you create and share content, so it doesn't feel completely on rails.
Gods Unchained is the old head of nft games - been around since 2018 - and it's still kicking. It's a strategic card game where you actually own your cards as NFTs. The gameplay is genuinely fun, not just some blockchain wrapper around a dead game. You're trying to reduce your opponent's health to zero with a crafted deck, and there's real strategy involved, not just luck. You can trade cards on OpenSea and mint new ones, which is pretty neat.
If mobile is more your thing, Heroes of Mavia is where it's at. You're building bases, managing resources like Gold and Oil, and battling other players for real cryptocurrency rewards. It's on Base network and has multiple tokens involved - MAVIA for governance, Ruby and Sapphire for in-game stuff. Honestly, with most people glued to their phones anyway, I think mobile nft games like this are going to blow up.
BloodLoop is another one that surprised me. It's a 5v5 hero-shooter where teamwork actually matters. Each character has unique weapons and abilities, and the Energy War mode is where the competitive stuff happens. They're using Avalanche Subnet for the blockchain integration, so your NFT items actually feel like they matter. The devs seem to actually listen to feedback too, which is refreshing.
Axie Infinity gets a lot of hate for the whole 2021 collapse thing - the token went from like $150 to $5. But they're still here, still have hundreds of thousands of followers, and people are still playing. You collect these creatures called Axies, breed them, battle them for tokens. It's a full economy at this point. Respect to the team for not just abandoning it.
Then there's Pudgy World, which is basically built around the Pudgy Penguins NFT collection. It's more chill - mini-games, social stuff, community challenges. You customize your penguin, trade NFTs through their marketplace, just vibe out. It's less hardcore than the others but still has that play-to-earn element.
The thing about nft games right now is they're actually starting to feel like real games instead of just get-rich-quick schemes. Whether you're into shooters, strategy, mobile games, or just collecting and hanging out, there's something here. 2026 is shaping up to be a decent year for this stuff.
