Meta is building a single data centre in Louisiana that will use 3x more electricity than the entire city of New Orleans.


They’re planning another one in Wyoming that will use more power than every home in the state combined.
The largest grid operator in America serves 65 million people across 13 states. They’re projecting a 6 gigawatt shortfall by next year. Nobody monitoring the grid has never seen strain like this.
151 million Americans are now at high risk of power shortfalls or blackouts in the next 5 years. Except it’s not due to the weather. The grid was built for an economy where power demand grew over decades, AI is growing it over months.
A terawatt of power requests have been submitted to US utilities. In Texas alone tens of gigawatts are pouring in every month. Barely a gigawatt has been approved in the last year. The queue to connect to the grid in some regions is 8 years long.
Total $650 billion in AI spending this year but nobody built the grid to support it. Your electricity bill will cover the gap.
