In 2016, the price of Bitcoin was still fluctuating within a few hundred dollars. That summer, I registered a Gate account in my university dormitory—back then it was still called “Bter”.

First Encounter: The Enlightenment of Technology

As a computer science student, I was curious about blockchain technology. On the day I signed up for Gate, I used my first internship paycheck to buy some Bitcoin. Back then, the interface was still very simple, but it was fully functional. Through it, I completed my first real transaction of crypto assets, and for the first time, I experienced the heart-racing rush brought by market volatility.

Shared the Wind and Rain: 2017 and 2021

At the end of 2017, Bitcoin surged to nearly 20,000. Watching the numbers in my Gate account change, I felt the shock of technological change for the first time. However, even more unforgettable was the major adjustment after the 2021 bull market—fear spread across the market, but Gate’s stability allowed me to respond calmly.

Unexpected Gains: Airdrops and Learning

Over the years, Gate has become my “crypto education platform”. Here, I tried out early DeFi projects, and some airdrops I received by surprise later turned out to be quite valuable. More importantly, through the articles from Gate Academy and its analysis tools, I gradually understood deeper market logic and technology trends—from a mere price observer to someone who truly understood the bigger picture.

Transformation and Keeping Faith

In 2018, Gate began its global expansion and transformation, and I also changed from a student into a developer. Interestingly, the first blockchain project I took part in was launched on Gate. Seeing the overlap between the projects I helped develop and the trading platform I had been using for a long time—this experience is hard to put into words.

Not Just Trading

In eight years, Gate has long meant more to me than just a trading platform. It’s like a witness, recording my shift from student to working professional, from crypto enthusiast to industry participant. My investment strategy has moved from aggressive to steady, but every time I open that familiar interface, I still think of that young person in 2016, full of longing, in the dorm room.

Today, my Gate account is still active. Although the crypto world has been turned upside down, whenever I see those crypto assets in my account that I’ve held since the early days, I think of that starting point—the era when a new world of technology and finance had just begun to open its doors to ordinary people.

Eight years isn’t long, but in the crypto world, it’s enough to go through several cycles. Gate and I are the same—we keep learning, adapting, and growing in this industry. Perhaps that’s the most fascinating part of the crypto space—we’re not only trading assets, but also taking part in shaping a piece of history.
