Recently, there has been renewed talk online about that person who claims to be a Japanese future traveler from 2058, named Reine Kokubun. This time, what she’s talking about is cryptocurrencies. To be honest, her previous predictions really were a bit uncanny—the Tokyo Olympics gold medal count, the Nikkei index plummeting, and Abe stepping down were all things she got right, so now the moment she speaks, it draws a lot of attention.
Reine Kokubun’s core point this time is that at the end of 2019, she used her father’s account to buy more than 1,400 coins of Ethereum in one go, and then buried them in her home’s yard, planning to dig them up in 2058. Why choose Ethereum instead of Bitcoin? She says it’s not because she’s bearish on Bitcoin; it’s because she believes the Ethereum ecosystem will have more application scenarios and greater growth potential. But there’s an interesting twist here—she also said that Bitcoin will rise to 78 million yen (about $4.94 million) in the future, but at that time, “you can only sell, not buy.” It sounds quite contradictory, but people who believe her interpret it as: buying Bitcoin now still offers a chance—you just need to be careful not to get trapped.
However, if you look closely at Reine Kokubun’s predictions, some researchers have raised questions. For example, her statements about an economic slowdown or political changes may only be deductions based on market signals and political rumors at the time, or maybe she just happened to get it right. On top of that, her phrasing does contain a lot of ambiguity—she uses hints that sound plausible, which makes it easy for people to fill in the blanks on their own. The scientific community generally remains skeptical about time travel.
From an investment perspective, Reine Kokubun has unintentionally sparked a wave of discussion about the long-term value of Bitcoin and Ethereum. Right now, BTC is around $75,000, and ETH is near $2,300. The market is indeed fluctuating quite a bit, driven by the U.S. election and the inflow of ETFs. Some people worry that her claim that “Bitcoin can only be sold” will trigger a new round of speculation or panic selling. But whether Reine Kokubun is truly a future person or is simply manufacturing attention, investors still need to stay rational and not let the hype cloud their judgment.
To put it plainly, Reine Kokubun’s identity and predictions remain mysterious and murky. Maybe she really is a time traveler, or maybe it’s all a carefully orchestrated media performance. For the crypto market, this may just be an interesting topic; for those who believe her, she’s like a prophet. But whether you believe it or not, investing ultimately has to rely on your own judgment and risk management—step by step, one footprint at a time.
