I noticed an interesting coincidence — when ETH surged to these levels, everyone started guessing how much was accumulated in Vitalik Buterin's wallet. Honestly, the numbers are impressive.
According to blockchain data, the founder of Ethereum's total holdings are estimated at around $1.03 billion. Most of it is, of course, ETH itself, about 240,000 coins worth approximately $1.01 billion. The rest is distributed among altcoins: AETHWETH, WHITE, MOODENG, KNC, and other tokens. Interestingly, even in his portfolio, you can see the history of the ecosystem's development.
Vitalik himself was born in Kolomna in 1994, but in childhood, his family moved to Canada, where he obtained Canadian citizenship. He studied computer science at the University of Waterloo but dropped out in 2014 to fully focus on his project. Before that, he also wrote for Bitcoin Magazine and actively studied blockchain.
What’s notable is that at the end of 2013, Vitalik proposed the idea of smart contracts as the foundation for a new platform. Ethereum was officially launched on July 30, 2015, after a successful ICO that raised $18 million. When the token first came out, ETH was worth just $0.31 — which now seems funny compared to the current $2.32k.
What this guy has done for the industry is a whole separate story. Ethereum became the second-largest cryptocurrency, sparked a revolution in DeFi, NFTs, and decentralized applications. In 2014, he received the Thiel Fellowship of ($100,000), then made it to Forbes 30 Under 30 and Fortune 40 Under 40.
His character is interesting — despite billions in his portfolio, he is known for his simplicity and modest clothing. For him, social impact has always been more important than personal wealth. He donated about a billion dollars to medical research, aid for refugees, and environmental projects. During the pandemic, he sent a significant part of his wealth to fight COVID in India.
He is still actively developing Ethereum, overseeing plans to transition to Ethereum 2.0 — focusing on increasing speed, security, and reducing energy consumption. This guy hasn't just accumulated wealth; he is genuinely building the future. That’s the portrait of the creator of one of the most significant platforms in crypto.
