At the same time, LAIKA was the first living creature to orbit the Earth. She was originally a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, selected by the Soviet space program. At that time, the technology wasn’t mature yet, and there was no return plan. After a few hours in space, Laika unfortunately died due to overheating inside the capsule.
Her remains, together with the satellite, orbited in space for several months until she re-entered the atmosphere and burned up in 1958. Laika’s story shocked the world and became a landmark event in the early days of space exploration
