A person's life can be divided into four levels of cultivation: First, the basic level is survival. Saving money and going to bed early are the most fundamental forms of self-protection. Material foundation determines the range of choices you have, and physical condition determines how far you can go. Second, the intermediate level is cognition. Reading allows people to see the world through others' experiences, and self-discipline helps maintain order against chaos. Opening one's horizons stabilizes life. Third, the higher level is the mind and character. Doing good deeds is about spreading kindness outward and expanding the connection between people and the world; solitude is about inward reflection, giving life depth. Fourth, the top level is emotions. Controlling anger helps prevent chain reactions caused by temporary emotions; controlling resentment transforms dissatisfaction into motivation for change. From safeguarding reality, to reshaping cognition, to nurturing the mind and character, and finally to mastering emotions. Ultimately, what is called cultivation is simply being able to control oneself at critical moments.
