So I've been looking at some artificial intelligence penny stocks lately, and there's one that's caught my attention for the right reasons. Evolv Technologies (EVLV) is trading around $3.86 right now, down 71% from its all-time highs, which honestly feels like a potential entry point if you're into this space.
The company does AI-powered security screening - basically touchless detection systems for weapons and explosives. They're replacing old metal detectors with tech that can process roughly 4,000 people per hour. It's actually pretty clever when you think about it. They've already got 750 customers including schools, hospitals, and sports venues, and their systems are catching over 1,000 weapons daily across 4,000 deployed units.
Here's what's interesting about their recent performance. Q2 2024 showed some solid momentum - they added 84 new customers, which was their highest acquisition rate since Q4 2022. Revenue came in at $25.5 million, up 29% year-over-year. But more importantly, their annual recurring revenue hit $89 million, up 64% YoY. They're clearly shifting to a subscription model, which is changing the game for their financials.
The margin story is compelling too. Gross margins expanded from 38% to 58% in the last year, and they're actually narrowing losses. Management is targeting positive EBITDA by Q2 2025, which would be a meaningful inflection point. Yeah, they're still unprofitable, but the trajectory matters here.
Of course, there's competition from players like Athena Security, so pricing power could be an issue. But out of five analysts covering this artificial intelligence penny stocks play, four are rating it strong buy with an average target of $5.35. That's 43% upside from current levels if the thesis plays out.
Look, artificial intelligence penny stocks are inherently risky, but sometimes you find situations where the fundamentals are actually improving and the market hasn't caught up yet. EVLV feels like one of those setups right now. Worth keeping on your radar if you're hunting for AI exposure in smaller companies.
