Just dug into 2021's crypto performance data and honestly, the market movement that year was absolutely wild. We saw the sector balloon from under 800 billion in January all the way to 2.2 trillion by year-end. While Bitcoin managed a solid 66% gain and Ethereum delivered impressive 418% returns, the real story was elsewhere.
Three distinct themes completely dominated the best performing crypto assets to invest in that period. The metaverse narrative was absolutely on fire - The Sandbox's SAND token skyrocketed around 16,265% while Axie Infinity's AXS hit 16,160%. People were genuinely betting that virtual worlds would become the next big thing, especially after Meta's rebranding. Decentraland's MANA also crushed it with roughly 3,943% gains. You could see this wasn't just retail hype either - major brands like Adidas and Under Armour started announcing partnerships with these platforms.
Then there were the so-called Ethereum killers. Everyone was complaining about Ethereum's gas fees, so alternative layer 1 blockchains absolutely exploded. Polygon took third place with 14,496% gains as its DeFi and NFT ecosystems boomed. Terra's LUNA went nearly 140x, becoming the second-largest DeFi ecosystem and pushing its stablecoin to a 10 billion market cap milestone. Fantom, Solana, and Avalanche also made the top 10, each capturing massive gains as developers and users searched for more scalable alternatives.
The meme coin phenomenon was impossible to ignore either. Dogecoin surged nearly 3,000% year-to-date, with a lot of social media buzz driving momentum. When DOGE mania cooled off, Shiba Inu took the spotlight with 1,608% gains, rounding out the top 10. Looking back at what were considered top crypto to invest in 2021, it's wild to see how the market has evolved since then. Most of these assets have pulled back significantly from their all-time highs - SAND is down around 70%, LUNA has dropped over 60%, and even Solana has seen substantial corrections. But that 2021 period definitely showed how quickly narratives can shift in crypto and which projects capture investor attention during bull runs.
