ME News message, April 1 (UTC+8), according to the UK’s The Daily Telegraph, Trump said that after NATO did not join his war against Iran, he is seriously considering having the United States withdraw from NATO. Trump referred to NATO as a “paper tiger,” and said that the U.S. leaving the alliance has “no longer [been] something to consider.” This is the strongest signal so far, indicating that after allies refused to respond to Trump’s request to dispatch warships to restart the Strait of Hormuz, the White House no longer views Europe as a reliable defense partner. When asked whether he would reconsider the United States’ membership in the alliance after the conflict ends, Trump replied: “I’d say that there is no longer any need to consider this. I was never convinced by NATO. I’ve always known they’re paper tigers, and by the way, so does Putin.” Trump added: “We have always been automatically involved, including Ukraine. Ukraine is not our problem. This is a test—we were there supporting them, but they didn’t support us.” (Source: ChainCatcher)
