I recently came across a fairly interesting story that mixes personal life and professional achievements in the tech world. On January 10, 2024, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, married Oliver Mulherin in Hawaii. The ceremony was intimate, with only about 15 attendees between close family members and friends. What’s curious is that Oliver Mulherin isn’t just an ordinary person in the AI world, but someone who has worked at Meta AI and has a solid track record in software development.
Born in Melbourne in 1993, Oliver Mulherin studied Computer Science at the University of Melbourne and has been through key places such as IOTA Foundation and Meta AI. According to reports, both of them have known each other since 2019 and share a genuine passion for artificial intelligence. The couple shared photos of their wedding on Instagram and received congratulations from prominent figures such as Lauren Sanchez and several tech entrepreneurs.
What really caught my attention is how this reflects changes in the tech industry. Tim Cook had already normalized the presence of LGBTQ+ leaders in executive positions, and now you see someone like Sam Altman marrying publicly without it turning into a scandal. That says a lot about maturity in the sector.
But beyond the wedding, what’s really moving the market is what Altman is doing with Worldcoin. In Argentina, the project has reached more than 500,000 World ID verifications, an important milestone considering it represents more than 1% of the country’s population. Oliver Mulherin has likely seen firsthand how Altman balances his role at OpenAI with this ambitious digital identity project.
Worldcoin recently launched World ID 2.0 with integrations on Reddit, Telegram, Shopify, and Mercado Libre. The WLD token has shown significant volatility in the market, fluctuating considerably depending on project developments. What’s interesting is that large amounts of WLD were withdrawn from centralized exchanges after the launch—an indication that investors are betting heavily on this technology.
The CEO of Worldcoin compared the launch to Apple rolling out a new version of iOS, and honestly, the comparison makes sense. The project is trying to solve a real problem: in a future where AI creates enormous wealth but also destroys jobs, how do we verify that you’re human? Oliver Mulherin and Sam Altman clearly believe the answer lies in advanced biometrics and a global identification system.
More than 4.8 million people already have a World ID, and the team is building a complete ecosystem around it. The Worldcoin Foundation even announced $5 million in grants for developers. That’s ambition on another level.
Altman’s story is fascinating because it shows someone who doesn’t separate his personal life from his professional vision. After handling what matters most in his personal life by marrying Oliver Mulherin, he seems completely focused on driving innovation in AI and Web3. His return to OpenAI and his leadership in Worldcoin paint the picture of a person who wants to leave a mark on the industry while living his life to the fullest. That’s truly inspiring, honestly.
