ME News message, April 1 (UTC+8). Anthropic has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian government, aiming to cooperate on artificial intelligence safety research and support the goals of Australia’s National AI Plan. The agreement was reached after a meeting between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Under the agreement, Anthropic will collaborate with the Australian AI Safety Institute, share research findings on emerging model capabilities and risks, participate in joint safety assessments, and conduct research cooperation with academic institutions. In addition, Anthropic will share its economic index data with the Australian government to track AI’s application across economic sectors, its economic impact, and its effects on the workforce; initially, it will focus on key industries such as natural resources, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. As part of the cooperation, Anthropic announced $3 million AUD in partnership funding for Australia’s leading research institutions to apply Claude to disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as computer science education and research. Specific collaborations include the Australian National University, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, and the Curtin Data Science Institute. Meanwhile, Anthropic will expand its “AI for Science” program to Australia and launch an API credits program targeting deep-tech startups. These initiatives mark the start of Anthropic’s long-term cooperation and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. The company is also expected to open an office in Sydney soon. (Source: InFoQ)
