ME News message, April 4 (UTC+8), local time Friday, U.S. District Chief Judge James Boasberg of the District of Columbia rejected the Department of Justice’s request to rehear the ruling in the criminal case involving Powell. Previously, his ruling barred subpoenas issued in connection with the criminal investigation involving Powell. In his March 13 ruling, Boasberg stated that the subpoena sent in January last year to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve was issued for an improper purpose—it was intended to pressure Powell to accept the conditions of President Trump’s demand for rapid rate cuts or to step down. The subpoena against Powell was issued by Jennyen Piero, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and a staunch supporter of Trump. Piero has pledged to continue the investigation and said her office is ready to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. According to sources, leadership at the Department of Justice supports this appeal decision. This appeal could delay confirmation of the Federal Reserve Chair nomination of Kevin Wosh. U.S. Senator Tom Tillis is a Republican member of the Senate Banking Committee; he previously criticized the investigation into Powell, and he vowed to continue blocking Wosh’s nomination while the appeal process is underway.
