Many people become anxious and panicked when faced with problems, desperately wanting immediate results. In reality, this often stems from an excessive reliance on a sense of control. The top-level skill that truly needs to be cultivated is the tolerance for “uncertainty.” Many suffer not because the situation is particularly difficult, but because they cannot accept a state without answers, results, or certainty. When you have zero tolerance for uncertainty, you are essentially greedily pursuing a sense of control. However, life is inherently full of the unknown; no matter how anxious you are, you cannot change some things. Learning to allow situations to remain in the gray area is a mature ability to let go, as well as a trust in yourself and reality. You should learn to let things stay as a “comma” rather than forcing a “period.” If you demand to control everything but face a reality beyond your power, you will only keep yourself in a state of vulnerability and anxiety for the long term. Not only does this torment yourself, but it also makes those around you feel suffocated.
