Virtuals Protocol and the Ethereum Foundation jointly launch the ERC-8183 standard to build an AI agent business layer
Deep Tide TechFlow News, on March 10, Virtuals Protocol revealed that it has jointly developed the ERC-8183 standard with the Ethereum Foundation dAI team, aimed at building a decentralized business layer for AI agents.
ERC-8183 defines the core primitive “Job,” involving three roles: client, provider, and evaluator. The standard uses smart contracts to escrow funds, ensuring a trustworthy full process from open, funding, submission, to completion/rejection/expiration. The evaluator can be an AI agent, smart contract, or multi-signature address, responsible for verifying deliverables and triggering fund release or refunds.
The standard introduces a “Hooks” mechanism for modular extension, supporting various business scenarios such as service tasks, fund transfers, bidding, and reputation gating. ERC-8183 works in conjunction with ERC-8004 (Agent Identity and Reputation Standard), with each completed task generating an on-chain verifiable record to establish a portable reputation system for agents.
