Regarding the truth about regression after awakening, I actually want to tell you that awakening has two levels. The first is our cognitive level, which is completed instantly. Once it happens, it’s impossible to regress, just like once you know the Earth is round, you can never believe it’s square again. The second is the experiential level, which needs to be integrated into every corner of life. That’s why you often feel the state of regression returning. There are actually three main reasons. The first is the fluctuations in experience. The sense of peace and joy after awakening is like waves, with highs and lows, but this doesn’t mean that awakening itself disappears; it just means your experience is fluctuating. The second is the re-emergence of old habits, because we’ve accumulated so many reaction patterns over the years. They don’t vanish overnight. Sometimes, they temporarily overshadow the clarity and calmness you experience after awakening. The third is the wavering of your sense of identity. Occasionally, you might identify with the role of the small ego again. Once you do, fear and confusion will return. In fact, the fear of regression itself is the last struggle of the small ego. It desperately tries to pull you back into your old familiar world. But remember, you are already awakened; you are just learning how to be an awakened person.
