## Ethereum Layer 2 and the New Era of Scaling
Transaction processing capacity within the Ethereum ecosystem has reached a new milestone. Based on Growthepie data, in the past 24 hours, the Ethereum network recorded 24,192 transactions per second, setting a new all-time high. This achievement, significantly surpassing previous records, is mainly due to the integration of the high-speed derivative platform Lighter into the ecosystem.
**The Rise of Lighter and Innovations in Scaling**
The transaction processing capacity brought about by Lighter is clearly reflected in comparison with Base Chain. While Base processes about 100–200 transactions per second, Lighter has jumped to approximately 4,000 transactions. This rapid performance improvement has generated great expectations within the Ethereum supporter community.
Recent implementations of the Pectra and Dencun upgrades have supported improvements in layer 2 throughput. Industry key figures, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, have mentioned this progress on social media, drawing attention.
**Expert Opinions and Future Outlook**
Ryan Sean Adams, host of the Bankless podcast, pointed out that the expansion of zero-knowledge proof technology and the growth of Lighter are driving this scaling leap. According to his analysis, layer 2 solutions since October have provided a scaling factor of 200x for Ethereum, with potential for TPS to reach 100,000 and even 1,000,000 in the coming months.
**Challenges and Ecosystem Balance**
However, since its launch on October 1, Lighter has faced multiple network outages, leading to comparisons with Solana’s early stages. In response to the major downtime on October 28, the Lighter team compensated approximately 774,872 USDC to about 3,900 wallets.
A more fundamental issue, according to Rezso Schmiedt, founding partner of ₿RRR Capital, is the structure where transaction fees generated on layer 2 are concentrated not in ETH but within the layer 2 layer. In other words, as transaction numbers increase, their value is less likely to flow back into the mainnet Ether. This highlights the need to reconsider the value accumulation on the Ethereum mainnet and the incentive design among layer 2 solutions.
**The Future of the Ecosystem as a Whole**
While these concerns exist, the majority of the Ethereum community remains optimistic about the scalability improvements brought by layer 2 solutions and the overall performance enhancement of the network.
