RSI: the indicator that traders love ( and sometimes hate )
Market timing is the hardest art of trading. But with RSI in hand, it becomes much less scary.
The Relative Strength Index is basically a “thermometer” of momentum. Does it rise above 70? The market is overheated. Does it fall below 30? It might be a good time to buy on the dip. It's that simple.
Why every crypto trader uses RSI
It's easy to read (scale 0-100), no need for a PhD in financial mathematics. The indicator shows not only if an asset is overbought/oversold but also the speed of that movement—the so-called momentum.
In addition, it identifies divergences. For example: price makes a new high, but RSI does not follow? A sign that the momentum is fading.
The problems that no one talks about
Not everything is perfect:
Advanced techniques
High/Low Divergence: Price at a new low but RSI rising? This may indicate hidden buying pressure.
Compare relative strength between assets: If BTC has an RSI >50 in a sideways market, while altcoins are falling, this says something about where the money is.
RSI Channels: Draw horizontal lines at key levels (20, 50, 80) and see how the price dances between them.
Real example: BTC in June 2024
Trader saw a bullish trend forming on the 4h chart. RSI was around 45-50 neutral. Clear support at $67,000-67,500.
Input: $67.500
RSI crossed 70 on June 5? Time to exit. Sell around $70,500-71,000, stop at $70,000.
Result: ~3,000 USDT profit with controlled risk.
The important detail
RSI alone is insufficient. Combine with:
Experienced traders see RSI as just another piece of the puzzle, not the ultimate solution.
Quick questions
Which period to use? It depends on your style. Beginners: daily or 4h. Scalpers: 1h or 15min.
Does it work with all cryptos? Yes, as long as it has a price history.
High RSI = guaranteed correction? No. It can stay overbought for weeks. It increases the probability, but guarantees nothing.
What if it gives a buy signal but the price drops? Divergence occurs in volatile markets. Use other indicators to confirm.
