What is BTC Dominance (DOM) and how does it affect the Crypto market?
Basic Definition
BTC Dominance ( or btc.d, DOM) is the percentage ratio of Bitcoin's market capitalization compared to the total market capitalization of the entire cryptocurrency market. In other words, it measures the "strength" of Bitcoin relative to other altcoins.
For example: If Bitcoin has a market cap of 9 billion USD and all altcoins combined have 1 billion USD, then DOM = 9 / ( + 1) = 90%.
Currently, DOM is fluctuating around 50-55%, compared to the peak level of over 90% in 2016 when Ethereum had not yet appeared.
Why is DOM Important?
Bitcoin plays the role of "base currency" in crypto. When you want to enter the market, you often have to buy BTC or USDT first. When altcoins decline, investors often sell altcoins to convert into BTC to preserve capital. This creates different scenarios:
4 Market Scenarios
1. BTC up + Altcoin up: Strong market confidence, capital flows into both.
2. BTC increases + Altcoin decreases: Capital flows into BTC, withdrawn from altcoin (DOM increases).
3. BTC falls + Altcoin falls: "When the king is sick, the court struggles", the entire market weakens.
4. BTC is ranging/falling + Altcoins are rising: BTC is accumulating strength, altcoins are starting to pump. This is a signal that altseason is coming soon.
Strategy When DOM Increases/Decreases
- DOM increase: Capital flows from altcoins into BTC. Investors should focus on altcoins with strong fundamentals, not chase high prices. This is an opportunity to "accumulate" when prices are low.
- DOM decline: Altcoins begin to shine, many projects are growing stronger than BTC. If BTC continues to rise, this will be the best altseason.
DOM History Through Cycles
- 2016: BTC > 90% DOM (no Ethereum competition).
- Mid-2017: ICO boom, DOM down to 35% (lowest), ETH up to 30% due to ICO demand.
- End-2017: BTC reached 20,000 USD, DOM recovered > 65%.
- Early 2018: "Sharks" took profits, withdrew into altcoin, DOM dropped to 33% - the lowest in history.
- 2020-2021: BTC from 3,800 USD → 41,000 USD, DOM surged to 74%.
- Currently (2024): DOM is at 50-55%, the market is balancing between BTC and altcoin.
Pro Tips
Reading the DOM needs to be combined with TOTAL ( total crypto market cap ), TOTAL2 ( altcoin market cap ), the DEFI index and USDT. Many new traders often get wrecked because they only look at the DOM without understanding where the "money action" is happening. Practical experience and sensing the flow of capital is key.
