! ## First adoption in Latin America

The Panama City City Council passed a proposal this week that would allow citizens to pay for public services using cryptocurrency. The decision, announced by Mayor Mayer Misrachi on X on the 16th, makes Panama City the first public government agency in Latin America to accept cryptocurrency payments.

Under the new system, citizens will be able to pay taxes, fines, permit issuance fees, and other fees in four types of instruments: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), USD Coin (USDC), and Tether (USDT). While the timing of its introduction and other altcoin responses have not been disclosed, it is a move that indicates that Panama as a whole is becoming more crypto-friendly.

This mechanism “will allow the free flow of cryptocurrencies throughout the economy and across the government,” Mayor Mizrachi said. Panama is one of the countries in Latin America that is adopting cryptocurrencies, and it is another step in expanding the public use of cryptocurrencies in Latin America, following El Salvador’s introduction of Bitcoin as legal tender.
