ZEC at $1,658—are you chasing it?
From $16 to $1,658 in one month, the ETF has just launched, the NU7 upgrade countdown is underway, but after hitting a wall twice at the previous high of $1,680, funding rates are ridiculously negative—is this the middle of the main uptrend, or are market manipulators dumping into the bullish news?
First, look at the surface: sideways at the highs after a surge.
Up 7-8% in 24 hours, double digits in 7 days, and doubled in 30 days. Market cap at $28 billion, entering the top ten. 16.88 million coins in circulation, hard-capped at 21 million. The daily price is well above the EMA20, EMA50, and EMA200, so the trend is intact. But RSI is already 68-69, overbought, and the previous high at $1,680-1,700 looks like a wall. Sunday liquidity is poor and the order book is thin; a single large order can easily draw a long upper wick.
First: the ETF is here, but institutions do not have an unlimited gas pedal.
Grayscale's ZCSH has converted from a trust into a U.S. spot ETF, with AUM at one point exceeding $1 billion. 21Shares has also launched a physically backed ZEC ETP on the Euronext. Privacy coins now have their first legitimate institutional capital entry.
Sounds like an epic bullish catalyst? Let me tell you one detail: the inflow pace suddenly paused in September.
In plain English: institutional buying is not a faucet, but a dropper. When they want to buy, ZEC is the leader of the privacy sector; when they stop, you are the liquidity providing exit liquidity at the highs.
Privacy coins are moving from the dark web to Wall Street, but Wall Street's money is not here for charity.
Second: the NU7 upgrade, with a November 5 mainnet target.
Testnet on October 6, final confirmation on October 20, and mainnet on November 5. Block times will be cut from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, Bitcoin-style halvings will be retained, and a fee-locking mechanism will be introduced. Holder voting participation is extremely high, and 25-second blocks passed with near-unanimous support.
This is an obvious event-driven catalyst. But remember—
The upgrade is the story; the price is emotion. November 5 could be a celebration, or it could be a funeral.
Experience tells me that the period around the testnet often sees a pump followed by a dump, while the mainnet launch itself often becomes a “buy the rumor, sell the news” event. Those with positions can turn trend positions into event positions in mid-October and reduce leverage. Do not chase on November 5 itself—that would be carrying the sedan chair for those who entered early.
Third: the token distribution is clean, but the economic model is a beggar.
A 21 million hard cap, no VC unlocks, and no sustained selling pressure from internal premine allocations. The shielded pool accounts for about 29%, up from just 8% at the beginning of 2024—4.9 million ZEC are locked in the privacy pool, with poor liquidity, effectively creating natural locked supply.
This is ZEC's strongest point.
But the soft side of that strength is this: fees can barely keep development alive. The team is funded by taking a cut of block rewards, while holders are diluted every year. There is no staking yield; holding the coin relies purely on the narrative and price differentials.
ZEC is the king of privacy, but a beggar when it comes to cash flow.
Narrative: A-. Protocol cash flow: C. The price has already fully priced in “institutional recognition + a privacy revival.”
You decide the battle between bulls and bears
On one side:
Grayscale spot ETF launched, with AUM exceeding $1 billion
NU7 mainnet on November 5, with a clear event-driven catalyst
Shielded pool share rose from 8% to 29%, creating naturally locked supply
Paradigm, Multicoin, and Cypherpunk Technologies are all accumulating
Daily bullish alignment, with negative-leaning funding rates meaning shorts are paying longs
On the other side:
RSI at 68-69, overbought, with signs of divergence emerging
The previous high at $1,680-1,700 has been rejected twice, creating heavy resistance
ETF inflows paused in September; institutional buying is not unlimited
BTC is catching its breath at 84,800, while Treasury yields are at 5.5% and rate-hike expectations are weighing heavily
Poor Sunday liquidity makes it unsuitable for betting on a breakout
A double in one month means profit-taking can hit at any time
The key level is $1,658, just $22 below the previous high at $1,680.
Immediate resistance: $1,680-1,700 (dense previous-high zone and bull-bear dividing line)
Next target: $1,746-1,750 (only worth discussing after a high-volume hold above $1,700)
Higher up: $1,890-2,000 (the upside imagination after breaking $1,700)
First support: $1,580-1,600 (pullback observation zone)
Key support: $1,530-1,550 (near the 24-hour low; losing it would weaken the short-term trend)
Structural support: $1,470 (last week's liquidation pit; losing it would end the main uptrend)
Major trend level: $1,300-1,360 (daily EMA20 and the final line of defense for the medium-term bulls)
Trading strategy (based on $1,658, no fluff)
Overall principle: medium-term bullish, short-term neutral to cautiously bearish. Use 3-5x leverage, never above 10x. Do not chase on Sunday; wait for the U.S. session on Monday.
For those with no position:
$1,658 offers poor risk-reward. Wait for a pullback to $1,580-1,600, with $1,530-1,555 as a better zone. Stop-loss on a confirmed daily break below $1,470. Take half off at the first target of $1,680-1,700, and target $1,745-1,760 next. If it surges through $1,700 on heavy volume and holds on the 4H chart, then consider chasing the breakout, with a stop below $1,640 and targets at $1,750/$1,890. Abandon a false breakout without increased volume immediately.
For those already holding low-entry longs:
Take some profit at $1,680-1,700 to lock in your cost basis, and use $1,470 as the line of life for the rest.
For those already chasing high-entry longs:
First reduce leverage and move the stop below $1,530. Do not fantasize about “doubling again before exiting.”
Short-term shorts (only for those with itchy trigger fingers):
Only enter if a long upper wick appears at $1,680-1,700, volume fails to keep up, and the 1H structure weakens. Short-entry zone: $1,685-1,705; stop above $1,725; targets: $1,620 → $1,580. Exit if you cannot hold; do not let it turn into a trend short. The broader trend is still bullish, and shorting against the trend is gambling with your life.
From $16 to $1,658, you see an opportunity; whales see your principal.
ZEC is not garbage. But $1,658 is a crowded zone near the previous high, not a cheap zone. The medium-term logic remains—ETF, privacy, NU7—but short-term volatility will be extremely ugly. Capital management matters more than direction.
Do not squeeze into crowded places; wait for a pullback, wait for breakout confirmation, and wait for the market to write the answer on the candlestick chart.
