CPI surges to 3.7%—the thing Bitcoin bulls feared most has happened after all!
Bitcoin fell below $82k. What really hurts the bulls is not this bearish candle, but the sudden realization that the rate-cut story may not be so easy to sell.
On October 14, the U.S. September CPI was released, with annual inflation rising to 3.7% and core CPI also increasing from 2.4% to 2.6%.
As soon as the news came out, the market changed course: U.S. Treasury yields jumped, the dollar strengthened, gold and silver fell, and U.S. tech stocks were sold off.
On October 15, Bitcoin came under pressure as well, falling about 2% in 24 hours to around $81,480.
Do you think this is just an ordinary pullback?
What truly deserves attention is that this decline may conceal a more troublesome chain of logic: rising oil prices push inflation higher, inflation limits room for rate cuts, and higher rate expectations put further pressure on risk assets.
And Bitcoin is particularly unlikely to completely escape this storm.
The most dangerous thing is not inflation, but a sudden reversal in market expectations
A major driver of this inflation rebound is the situation in the Middle East.
War drives up energy prices, raising the cost of gasoline and diesel and ultimately passing through to the living costs of U.S. residents. Oil prices are not an isolated figure; they affect transportation, production, and consumption, making inflation more difficult to control.
Here is the question.
If inflation continues to rebound, why would the Federal Reserve rush to cut rates?
The market had originally expected lower funding costs and improved liquidity, with more capital flowing back into risk assets such as stocks and Bitcoin.
But now, the script is starting to change.
When the market starts betting again that rates could rise in the future, investors will recalculate the valuations of risk assets. Rising Treasury yields mean capital can earn more attractive returns; a stronger dollar could also put pressure on dollar-denominated assets.
The Nasdaq fell, chip stocks were sold off, and Bitcoin weakened in tandem. These are not three unrelated events, but different manifestations of the same cooling in risk appetite.
What a bull market fears most is not the emergence of bad news, but the failure of the reasons supporting the bull market.
Of course, a single CPI report cannot directly determine the Federal Reserve's next move, much less mean that rate hikes are already a certainty. But at least one thing is clear: the market can no longer treat rate cuts as an automatic positive.
Bitcoin falls to $81k—the real test is just beginning
Bitcoin is currently hovering around $81k, already nearing the lower end of its recent trading range.
What matters most here is not guessing whether the next candlestick will be red or green, but observing which choice the market makes.
First scenario: holding around $80k.
If selling pressure gradually eases, the price stabilizes, and it recovers key levels, this decline may have been more of a short-term de-risking event triggered by a macro shock. The market may still have a chance to organize another rebound.
Second scenario: a decisive break below $80k.
If the rebound lacks strength after the break and selling continues to increase, be alert to support turning into resistance. At that point, the market could fall further, while leveraged bulls may intensify the decline through liquidations.
Third scenario: inflation continues to exceed expectations.
This is the situation that requires the most caution. If subsequent data remains persistently hot and rate expectations continue to rise, even a short-term Bitcoin rebound would not mean that macro pressure has been lifted.
Note that $80k is a key zone for gauging market sentiment, not an iron floor that guarantees a rebound. Whether the price can hold will need to be jointly confirmed by trading volume, capital flows, and subsequent macro data.
This is where the market is most brutal: you may think it has fallen enough, but the market may not necessarily think it is cheap.
So how should Bitcoin be viewed from here?
In the short term, watch whether the risk release has ended; in the medium term, watch whether the macro environment can improve.
It is not appropriate now to declare the bull market over based on a single number, nor to assume this time will definitely repeat the past simply because every previous decline rebounded.
Focus on three signals going forward:
U.S. inflation: Whether subsequent CPI and PCE readings remain hot, especially whether the shock from energy prices has spread.
U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar: If both continue to strengthen, the room for a rebound in risk assets may be limited.
The $80k level for BTC: Watch whether the price can stabilize, whether the rebound has volume, and whether it can quickly reclaim the level after breaking below it.
One more thing should not be overlooked: analysts collectively turning bullish does not mean the market will rise immediately. Opinions can change within a day, but capital will not stop retreating because of a few bullish comments.
A true bottom is not called into existence by everyone shouting about it; it emerges after sellers can no longer push prices lower.
In the past, many people bought Bitcoin betting on rate cuts, liquidity, and a recovery in risk appetite.
Now that inflation is rising again, the market is recalculating the equation.
If rate-cut expectations continue to cool, Bitcoin must prove that, beyond macro liquidity, it has sufficiently strong buying support of its own.
That is the most critical dividing line from here.
I will not declare the bull market over because of a single CPI report, nor will I blindly buy the dip as prices fall.
First see whether $80k can hold, then see whether the dollar and Treasury yields cool down.
Remember this: when prices rise, positive news can help you make money; when prices fall, cash and discipline are what keep you at the table.
Do you think Bitcoin falling to around $80k this time will become the starting point for the next rebound, or the beginning of a larger correction?
