UNI at $7.1—did you sell at a loss?
CME just launched UNI futures, making UNI the first DeFi token ever listed on CME. a16z holds 64 million tokens, protocol revenue hit a record—but the price fell from 10.9 to 7.1, down 35%. Is this the final shakeout before institutions enter, or has DeFi's leading project completely lost its shine?
First, the surface picture: the good news landed, but the price fell.
The September high was 10.9; now it's 7.1, down 35% in a month. It fell another 5-7% in 24 hours, touching an intraday low of 7.00. The candlestick chart tells you: price has fallen below the 7-day, 20-day, and 50-day moving averages; the 7.3-7.8 range has turned from support into resistance; RSI at 42-46 is neutral to weak; MACD is below the zero line—all the indicators are saying one thing: short-term sentiment is bearish, so don't rush to buy the dip.
But wait.
CME's launch, a16z's large position, buybacks and burns—these are real positives. So why is the price falling?
First: CME's launch—is it good news or a "sell-the-news" event?
CME officially launched UNI futures, with standard contracts of 10,000 UNI and micro contracts of 1,000 UNI. FalconX and GSR completed the first block trade. UNI is the first DeFi governance token listed on CME.
What does this mean?
Institutions now have compliant hedging tools and a way to participate. This is a material positive for institutional access, not empty promises.
But here's the harsh truth:
The market knew about CME's launch well in advance. The launch day itself was the "sell-the-news" opportunity.
Retail traders always chase on the day good news lands; institutions always sell on that day.
Second: Buybacks and burns are real, but so is the growth budget
After UNIfication, the protocol fee switch was turned on, and fees began going directly toward UNI buybacks and burns. More than 113 million UNI have been burned in total, with an average of about 30,000 UNI burned daily recently, or an annualized 12 million UNI over 30 days—2% of circulating supply.
That's real buying pressure.
Protocol revenue hit a record $14.8 million in September. Uniswap is still the leading DEX, with $4.1 billion in TVL and 24-hour trading volume in the $2 billion range.
But on the other hand:
The annual growth budget is 20 million UNI. 12 million burned, 20 million issued—net issuance of 8 million.
In plain English: buybacks and burns are for show; the issuance budget is what matters. The net effect is still inflationary.
Don't be fooled by the word "burn." Calculating the net figures is what grown-ups do.
Third: The technicals are at a point where the market must choose a direction
The daily chart has fallen below all short-term moving averages, and 7.3-7.8 has become a resistance zone. RSI is at 42-46—not oversold, with room to fall further.
Key levels:
Support: 7.00 (psychological level) → 6.88 (structural level) → 6.64 (strong support) → 6.3-6.5 (lower Bollinger Band)
Resistance: 7.31 (pivot) → 7.50-7.55 → 7.73 (today's high) → 7.8-8.5 (moving average recovery zone)
But the long-term signals haven't broken:
The price is still above the 200-day moving average, and the broader uptrend remains intact. Exchange reserves continue to decline, and spot buyers are still absorbing supply.
The short-term outlook is bearish, but 6.8-7.0 is a zone to watch for medium-term positioning. If 6.88 breaks and the daily close confirms it, the next stop is 6.64.
The bull-bear showdown—judge for yourself
On one side:
CME launch, the first DeFi governance token listed on CME
a16z holds 64 million UNI (about 10% of circulating supply)
Grayscale DeFi Fund increases its holdings
Buybacks and burns provide real buying pressure, averaging 30,000 UNI a day
Exchange reserves are declining, with spot buyers absorbing supply
Still above the 200-day moving average over the long term
On the other side:
Down 35%, from 10.9 to 7.1
Below all short-term moving averages; technical outlook is bearish
Net issuance of 8 million UNI a year; burns don't offset it
Activity slowed in October, and protocol revenue declined month over month
The Fed resumed rate hikes in September; 10-year US Treasury yield at 5.29%
The October 27-28 FOMC meeting and rate hike expectations are weighing on risk assets
Short term (intraday to a few days):
At 7.1, price is below the moving averages. Don't chase shorts or rush to buy the dip. Watch whether 7.00-6.88 holds. If 6.88 breaks and the daily close confirms it, look to 6.64. A rebound that gets rejected at 7.3-7.5 is an area to reduce positions or go short. Keep leverage below 3x.
Medium term (weeks to a month):
If the 6.8-7.0 range stabilizes on rising volume, or funding rates stay neutral to negative while spot buyers absorb supply, that could be a good medium-term entry. First target 7.8-8.5 (moving average recovery), then 9-10. CME and burns are medium-term support factors.
Long term:
As a leading DEX with real burns, institutional access, and exposure to the tokenized asset sector, UNI remains a core DeFi asset. But do the net calculation: 12 million burned versus 20 million issued means net inflation. A reduction in the growth budget or a surge in revenue would be the real turning point.
UNI right now is like BNB in 2023—
Everyone said, "Exchange tokens are going nowhere." And then?
BNB went from 200 to 600.
Institutional catalysts never make a token rise on launch day. It's three months after launch, when you realize the tokens are no longer in retail hands.
