ETH at $2,480—are you buying the dip?
First, the surface view: a surge followed by a retreat, with retail traders cursing.
After Friday’s CPI, ETH surged to $2,665, and the entire market shouted, “$3,000 is not a dream.” What happened? It crashed back to $2,480 in two days, down 7%. The candlesticks tell you that the high-volume bullish candle on September 11 was a typical “fake breakout after a liquidity sweep”—luring traders in before killing those chasing the rally.
First question: ETFs are buying, while Wintermute is selling. Who do you trust?
On September 11, U.S. spot ETH ETFs saw $216 million in net inflows, with BlackRock’s ETHA alone contributing $149 million. Overall flows for the week were positive, in stark contrast to the continuous outflows from BTC ETFs—the funds are rotating from BTC into ETH.
But on the same day, Wintermute transferred $160 million worth of ETH to exchanges, which the market interpreted as potential selling pressure or market-making hedging. Whales are also distributing.
Second question: 34% of ETH is locked up, and the circulating supply is drying up.
The staking ratio has risen to 34%, with more than 41 million ETH locked away. Corporate treasuries such as Bitmine continue to accumulate and stake ETH, now approaching 4.9% of the circulating supply. Tom Lee is still saying that ETH is the settlement layer and the infrastructure for AI and Wall Street.
The Glamsterdam upgrade is scheduled for 2026, raising the gas limit to 200 million, with parallel execution and ePBS doubling L1 throughput. L2s, RWA, and stablecoin settlements are all running on the ETH ecosystem.
ETH is now a yield-bearing asset and a core asset for institutional allocation.
Third question: an FOMC rate hike—the first since 2023.
August CPI was 3.4% year-over-year, with core inflation remaining sticky. The federal funds rate is 3.50%-3.75%, and at the September 15-16 FOMC meeting, the probability of a 25 bp hike has already surged above 80%.
This is the first rate-hike expectation since 2023 and a major shift following the rate-cut cycle in 2025.
Rate hikes = liquidity withdrawal = pressure on risk assets
If the wording is hawkish and the dot plot moves higher, ETH could crash to $2,400 or even $2,350.
If the hike is delivered but the wording is dovish, the negative news may already be fully priced in, potentially allowing a rebound to $2,600+.
You can judge the bull-bear battle for yourself.
On one side:
ETH ETFs continue to see net inflows, with BlackRock bringing in $149 million in a single day.
34% of ETH is locked in staking, and the circulating supply is shrinking.
Corporate treasuries are accumulating, and Tom Lee is bullish.
The medium-term structure is bullish, and the monthly chart is still rising.
On the other side:
Wintermute transferred $160 million worth of ETH, and market makers are selling.
Whales are distributing, and short-term selling pressure is real.
The probability of an FOMC rate hike is 80%, with the risk of tightening liquidity.
$2,550 has failed three times, and $2,665 was a fake breakout.
Resistance above: $2,500-$2,550 (range top) → $2,600-$2,665 (previous high) → $2,700
Support below: $2,470-$2,480 (today’s low) → $2,425-$2,430 (20-day moving average) → $2,400 (psychological level)
Trading strategy
Short-term traders:
Try a small long position at $2,480-$2,470, with a stop-loss below $2,420 and a target of $2,520-$2,550. If ETH breaks above $2,550 and holds, add to the position and target $2,600-$2,665.
If the rebound is rejected at $2,520-$2,550, you can open a small short position, with a stop-loss at $2,580 and targets of $2,480-$2,430. This is suitable for hedging existing positions; don’t take a heavy one-way short position.
Swing traders:
After the FOMC decision, go long with the trend if rates are raised but the wording is dovish; if the hawkish stance exceeds expectations, wait for a crash to $2,400-$2,350 before buying in batches.
Long-term believers:
Below $2,400, dollar-cost average with your eyes closed. With staking locks, ETF buying, and the upgrade coming online, the medium-term target is $3,000-$3,500.
ETH now resembles Bitcoin in 2020—
Everyone thinks it can no longer rise, but ETFs and staking end up consuming the entire circulating supply.
The day $2,550 breaks, you’ll realize:
It wasn’t that ETH was incapable—it was that you kept getting scared into selling at a loss before every FOMC meeting.
At $2,480, do you dare buy the dip?
