KOSPI’s 3.73% Plunge: AI Optimism Meets Market Reality as Investors Reassess Risk
South Korea’s stock market delivered a sharp warning on October 20, 2026, when the KOSPI dropped 3.73% to close at 5,552.74. The decline wiped out the previous session’s gains and highlighted a growing concern across global markets: strong technological growth does not always translate into continuously rising stock prices.
In my view, this sell-off is about more than a single disappointing trading session. It reflects the combination of semiconductor volatility, uncertainty surr

META'S EARNINGS PARADOX: RECORD REVENUE, RISING AI COSTS, AND A WALL STREET REALITY CHECK
The stock market has delivered a powerful reminder that strong earnings do not always guarantee a rising share price. Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, reported impressive third-quarter revenue growth, yet its shares suffered a sharp selloff as investors focused on the enormous cost of its artificial intelligence ambitions.
On October 22, 2026, Meta shares fell approximately 7% following the company's latest earnings announcement. The reaction highlighted a growing debate across Wall Street: how much should investors pay today for AI growth that may take years to deliver its full financial return?
📊 Meta's Q3 2026 Financial Performance
Meta reported revenue of $64.60 billion, representing a substantial 26% increase compared with the same quarter last year. Advertising remained a major growth engine, supported by higher ad impressions, stronger pricing, and improvements in AI-powered recommendations.
The company also reported the following results:
• Revenue: $64.60 billion, up 26% year over year.
• Net income: $9.86 billion, compared with $2.71 billion a year earlier.
• Reported diluted EPS: $3.83, compared with $1.05 in Q3 2025.
• Capital expenditures: $34.91 billion during the quarter.
• Free cash flow: Negative $2.12 billion.
These figures require context. Meta recorded a substantial legal-related charge of approximately $9.89 billion. Excluding that charge, diluted earnings per share would have been approximately $7.40. Therefore, the reported decline in operating income and the increase in expenses should not be interpreted without considering the legal expense.

🤖 Why Did Meta Shares Fall Despite Strong Revenue?
The primary concern is the rising price of the AI race.
Meta is investing aggressively in data centers, computing infrastructure, advanced AI models, and new products. These investments are intended to improve advertising efficiency, increase engagement across its platforms, and develop new AI services.
However, investors want clear evidence that the spending will generate sufficient returns.
Meta raised the lower end of its 2026 capital expenditure outlook, with the company now expecting spending of $135 billion to $145 billion. This enormous commitment has intensified concerns about future cash flow, infrastructure costs, and the time required to monetize AI investments.
The company also announced plans to establish a new class of non-voting Class C shares, creating another potential funding mechanism for future investments and other corporate priorities.
For shareholders, the central question is whether AI-driven revenue growth can eventually outpace the associated expenses.
📱 AI Remains Meta's Biggest Growth Opportunity
Despite the market reaction, Meta's underlying business continues to show considerable strength.
Its advertising ecosystem reaches billions of people worldwide. Better recommendation systems can increase engagement, while AI tools can help advertisers target audiences and improve campaign performance.
Meta is also expanding its AI product ecosystem, including its Muse AI initiatives. If these products attract users and generate sustainable revenue, today's infrastructure investments could support significant long-term growth.
The challenge is timing. Investors must distinguish between promising technology and measurable financial returns.
📉 What Does the Selloff Mean for the Broader Market?
Meta's decline also affected sentiment across technology and semiconductor stocks. On October 22, the Nasdaq Composite fell approximately 2.60%, while the S&P 500 declined around 1.21%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished almost unchanged.
This reaction suggests that the market is becoming more selective about AI-related investments. Strong demand for artificial intelligence is no longer enough by itself; investors increasingly want evidence of profitability, disciplined spending, and sustainable cash generation.
🔮 Market Outlook: Bullish Potential or Further Downside?
Meta's short-term outlook remains uncertain.
A bullish scenario could emerge if advertising growth remains strong, AI products gain traction, and management demonstrates that capital expenditures are translating into higher long-term returns. Under these conditions, the selloff could eventually attract investors looking for opportunities in a fundamentally strong business.
A bearish scenario becomes more likely if spending continues to rise faster than revenue, free cash flow remains under pressure, or investors lose confidence in the profitability of AI infrastructure.
The next important signals will be advertising growth, operating margins, capital expenditure guidance, free cash flow, and management's explanation of AI monetization.
My conclusion: Meta's selloff is not necessarily evidence that its business is weakening. Instead, it reflects a market reassessing the cost, timing, and profitability of the company's AI strategy.
For investors, patience and disciplined risk management matter more than reacting emotionally to a single trading session. Strong revenue is encouraging, but sustainable cash flow and profitable growth will ultimately determine whether Meta can regain its upward momentum.

This situation once again highlights the decisive impact of energy costs on the global economy. With Brent crude oil trading above $100 per barrel, the effects extend well beyond fuel prices, directly influencing inflation expectations and the monetary policy choices of central banks. Consequently, investors are now tasked with seeking a new equilibrium.
The impact of rising energy prices on inflation is clearly evident in the latest data. In the United States, the 9.1% monthly surge in gasoline prices played a major role in pushing the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September to 3.7%.

Hello, Gate Square community! The data currently appearing on market screens clearly reveals just how delicate and tight the balance in the oil market has become. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) October report indicates that global oil inventories fell by an average of 1.9 million barrels per day in the third quarter, with a further decline of 0.7 million barrels per day projected for the fourth quarter. This is not merely a supply-demand imbalance; it is concrete evidence that the market is tightening further with each passing day.
The primary driver behind this situation is the decline in commercial oil inventories across OECD countries, which, as of September, fell to a level equivalent to 58.1 days of consumption. While a range of 55–65 days is historically considered normal, anything below 55 days signals tight inventory conditions. Although the current level of 58.1 days has not yet fallen below the critical threshold, the continuous erosion of stocks shows that this buffer is thinning week by week. Indeed, the EIA has confirmed a draw of 3.06 million barrels in U.S. commercial crude oil inventories—a figure significantly higher than expectations.
So, how is this tightening reflected in prices? As of October 23, Brent crude climbed to $117.38, reaching its highest level since March, while WTI is trading at $103.44. The real-time data shown in the visuals further confirm this picture: Brent stands at $116.97, WTI at $104.27, and natural gas at $3.073. The reason prices are holding at these levels is not merely the decline in current inventories, but also concerns regarding potential future supply disruptions. The fact that December 2027 futures contracts are priced at $87 suggests that the market anticipates tight conditions in the short term, followed by a normalization in the long term.
However, one must exercise caution here. The EIA’s projected inventory drawdown of 0.7 million barrels for the fourth quarter represents a notable slowdown compared to the 1.9 million-barrel decline seen in the third quarter. In other words, while inventories are still shrinking, the pace of this decline is decelerating. Should we see an increase in U.S. commercial inventories in the coming weeks, or an easing of supply disruptions in the Middle East, the upward pressure on prices could diminish. Conversely, if inventory drawdowns persist alongside ongoing geopolitical risks, the current tight balance will likely be maintained.
For me, as an individual investor, the most critical indicators in this landscape are the weekly EIA inventory data and shifts in the number of days of OECD commercial inventory cover. Rather than attempting to predict the direction of prices, it is far more prudent to monitor these concrete supply-side metrics. The oil market is currently in a state of "tight yet fragile" equilibrium. Any developments that disrupt this balance would have direct repercussions—not only for oil, but also for bond yields (via inflation expectations) and risk assets.

Bitcoin’s next key test is near $81.5K.
$BTC remains above the True Market Mean near $78K and the Short-Term Holder Cost Basis, keeping the broader structure constructive.
But the US Spot ETF Cost Basis is the level to watch.
BTC has reclaimed this zone after dipping below it twice in October.
A daily close below $81.5K could put the average US spot ETF holder underwater and weaken the nearest support.
Will BTC hold this level or lose it?
