The U.S. labor market has just delivered a macro signal that markets cannot afford to ignore.
July nonfarm payrolls came in at -23,000, dramatically below expectations for roughly 80,000 new jobs. But the headline number is only part of the story.
The revisions are arguably more important.
May payroll growth was revised from 129,000 to 63,000, while June was cut from 57,000 to just 20,000. Together, those revisions erased approximately 103,000 previously reported jobs.
That changes the interpretation of the labor market.
